After the first week, water 30 minutes twice a day, each section for 2 weeks. After 3 weeks, try to schedule lawn mowing after you have let the lawn dry out, about 1 day. A good rule of thumb is not to cut the lawn short, or ‘scalp’. It is best to cut 2 times per week. You must bag a new clippings every lawn mowing (until the end of the first year), or they will smother the new lawn. Apply a light application of the fertilizer of your choice and water deeply. We recommend a dry, time release fertilizer. Scott’s brand is a very good choice. Whatever brand you choose, make sure the spreader and fertilizer are from the same company. Read all directions, fertilize and water. After 4 weeks, decrease your watering to daily. If the weather is hot, dry or windy, increase the watering. Once the lawn is established, it is still important to water and fertilize. You should water 3 times per week, equal to about 1-1/2 inches. Fertilize 6 weeks after the first application. It is important to fertilize in early fall (September) and again in November after you rake up all your leaves. It is very important to a new or existing lawn, to remove fall leaves. Never let leaves over winter, as they will suffocate the grass. The following year is crucial for the future establishment of your lawn. It is important that you create a schedule of fertilizing 5 times per year. Watering should be a minimum of 2 inches per weed during the hotter months of the year.
